CHARLES DICKENS AND HIS CLASSICS

 

Charles Dickens 

Charles John Huffam Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812.  He had an unhappy childhood by starting working in a factory to stick labels on bottles of shoe-polish at the age of 12 while his father went to prison for all the debts that he had.  At 14, Charles worked as a clerk in a legal office and became a newspaper reporter with the pen name Boz. After that he went on to become a world-wide famous journalist and writer, publishing over 30 novels and short stories, here are some of his most notorious ones.

Oliver Twist

"Oliver Twist" is a touching story about a young boy who faces tough times in England during the 1800s. It shows how Oliver stays strong even when life is hard…

Oliver is a child born in a workhouse, facing a life of poverty with mistreatment and hunger. After daring to ask for more food, Oliver is sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker, but he eventually runs away to London. In London, he meets a group of young people and becomes a part of their criminal activities, while he decides to remain innocent and pure-hearted throughout the circumstances. The novel explores themes of poverty, mystery, social injustice, and the struggle between good and evil. Oliver faces dangers, betrayal, and trials, all while maintaining his innate goodness and innocence.

A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens' most famous work is 'Christmas Carol' , published in 1843. The plot follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser and selfish old man. On Christmas Eve. Scrooge is visited by four ghosts: the Spirit of Christmas Past, Present and Future, as well as the ghost of his deceased partner Jacob Marley. These apparitions show Scrooge the mistakes of his past, his current attitude and the future consequences of his greed.

Such a beautiful moving story, that Disney has already made several versions of Dickens’ tale. So, if you lack time to read it this summer under the sun, watch the movie, you won’t regret it!

A KID LIKE JAKE

 

A kid like Jake, a movie worth seeing

Streaming on Amazon Prime you can watch “A kid like Jake”, a drama film released in 2018, directed by Silas Howard. It stars Claire Danes and Jim Parsons as parents navigating the challenges of raising a gender non conforming child,

They find themselves facing the challenges of accepting and understanding his gender identity. The story revolves around their journey to find the right school for Jake while addressing social expectations and prejudices.

The film explores themes of acceptance, social norms, and the unconditional love parents have for their children, even in the face of social pressures.

 

Gender equality and gender stereotypes

 The movie highlights that the lack of rights and opportunities for women contributes to the perpetuation of poverty and the impoverishment of communities. Addressing gender inequalities requires a change in social norms and the adoption of inclusive and cost-effective policies to support women, promote gender equality and foster sustainable development.

Gender stereotypes have existed since ancient times, but nowadays they are very present, in some countries and cultures today. Figures show that women still face abuse even in those countries who are traditionally referred to as developed and advanced.
